    With rapidly changing ecology, urbanization, climate change, increased travel and fragile public health systems, epidemics will become more frequent, more complex and harder to prevent and contain. Here we argue that our concept of epidemics must evolve from crisis response during discrete outbreaks to an integrated cycle of preparation, response and recovery.

  • Erasmus MC Virologist Bernadette van den Hoogen receives large European grant

    Virologist Dr Bernadette van den Hoogen has received a Marie Sk?odowska-Curie action grant for Innovative Training Networks. With a budget of 3.5 million euros, Van den Hoogen's network can realise the project INITIATE to acquire more insight into the interaction between viruses, the human immune system and metabolism at the cellular level. Ten European partners have established the consortium INITIATE for this research, and they will set up a research group with 15 European PhD students that will work on this new discipline for three years.

  • ReCoDID Kick-off Meeting in Heidelberg, Germany 6-7th May 2019. Viroscience participated in the ReCoDID kick off meeting.

    ReCoDID (‘Reconciliation of Cohort data in Infectious Diseases’), a Horizon 2020 project funded by the European Commission (EC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), had its inaugural kick-off meeting May 6-7th in Heidelberg, Germany. The consortium brings together a multidisciplinary team from four continents to fast track the research response to viruses and other pathogens by facilitating data and sample sharing between infectious disease cohort studies and buiding linkages between data generators and the Open Science community. ReCoDID is coordinated by Dr. Thomas Jaenisch at Heidelberg University Hospital and the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health (HIGH).

  • Escmid research grant for Widagdo on the role of MERS-coV pathogenesis

    Widagdo applied for this grant during the last year of his Ph.D. and is also happy to announce that he will defend his thesis on June 18, 2019, 9.30 am at Querido Zaal, Erasmus MC (everybody is invited!). His PhD project focuses on understanding the transmission and pathogenesis of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) by studying its receptor, a protein called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4).

  • Erasmus MC hoogleraar Marion Koopmans gekozen tot lid KNAW

    Erasmus MC-hoogleraar Marion Koopmans, viroloog en hoofd van de afdeling Viroscience, is door de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW) gekozen als nieuw lid. In totaal heeft de KNAW negentien nieuwe leden gekozen. Leden van de KNAW, vooraanstaande wetenschappers uit alle disciplines, worden gekozen op grond van hun wetenschappelijke prestaties. De KNAW telt circa vijfhonderdvijftig leden en een lidmaatschap is voor het leven. Op maandag 16 september worden de nieuwe Akademieleden geïnstalleerd.

  • Mazelen veroorzaakt langdurige schade afweersysteem

    Het mazelenvirus infecteert en doodt de geheugencellen van ons afweersysteem. Dat is de conclusie van een studie van onderzoekers van het Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, die deze week wordt gepubliceerd in het tijdschrift Nature Communications. Mazelen verzwakt het afweersysteem, waardoor kinderen na herstel van mazelen vatbaarder zijn voor andere infectieziekten. In een recent in BMJ Open gepubliceerde epidemiologische studie liet dezelfde onderzoeksgroep zien dat kinderen tot enkele jaren na mazelen gemiddeld meer infecties doormaken dan kinderen die geen mazelen hadden gehad.

  • Minder ruimingen, meer preventie Raad voor Dierenaangelegenheden ziet ruimte voor verbeteren van dierziektebestrijding

    Uitbraken van vogelgriep komen de laatste jaren steeds vaker voor en het besmettingsgevaar neemt toe. Daardoor zijn er meer ruimingen en is er meer maatschappelijke onrust. Daarom moeten overheid en bedrijfsleven opnieuw kijken naar de manier waarop in ons land dierziekten worden bestreden, met als resultaat meer aandacht voor het voorkómen van ziekte-uitbraken en minder ruimingen, bijvoorbeeld door snelle vaccinatie. Daarnaast zijn transparantie en zorg voor goede publieksvoorlichting over de aanpak van besmettingen gewenst. Dat zegt de Raad voor Dierenaangelegenheden (RDA) in een vandaag gepresenteerde zienswijze.

  • Mini viral RNAs act as innate immune agonists during influenza virus infection

    In a recent Nature Microbiology paper the role of mini viral RNAs in the pathogenesis of influenza has been described. This study has been performed by Aartjan te Velthuis (University of Cambridge), Ervin Fodor (University of Oxford) and collaborators from all over the world including Jurre Siegers and Debby van Riel from the Department of Viroscience, Erasmus MC.

  • Marion Koopmans ontvangt Stevin Prize

    Focus van de Stevin Prize: sociale impact van research. Zes toponderzoekers ontvingen vandaag de NWO-Spinozapremie en de -Stevinpremie uit handen van minister van Engelshoven van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap. De premies zijn de hoogste onderscheiding in de Nederlandse wetenschap. Celbiologe Anna Akhmanova, biofyisica Marileen Dogterom, sociaal psycholoog Carsten de Dreu, historica Beatrice de Graaf, virologe Marion Koopmans en microbioloog John van der Oost presenteerden tijdens de feestelijke uitreiking hun plannen met de onderzoekspremie van 2,5 miljoen euro per persoon.

  • Marion Koopmans receives the NWO Stevin Prize

    Today NWO chair Stan Gielen announced that professor Marion Koopmans - Head of the Department of Viroscience of the Erasmus MC - and professor Beatrice de Graaf of the University of Utrecht receive the NWO Stevin Prize. Professor Anna Akhmanova, professor Marileen Dogterom, professor Carsten de Dreu and professor John van der Oost receive the NWO Spinoza Prize. The Stevin and the Spinoza Prizes are the highest awards in Dutch science. Each laureate will receive 2.5 million euros, which they can spend on scientific research and activities related to knowledge utilisation.

  • Pigs as models for Zika research

    Paul Wichgers Schreur is one of the speakers at the NCOH Annual Scientific Meeting on May 30th hosted by the Department of Viroscience of the Erasmus MC. Wichgers Schreur is a senior scientist of Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) and will present the development of a pig model for Zika virus research. WBVR is part of Wageningen University & Research, which is partner of NCOH.

  • Technasiumleerlingen strijden in Evoluon om de Viruskenner-Technasium Top Award 2018

    More than 60 teams are inventing innovative methods of prevention against a worldwide virus outbreak. Almost 250 thirdyear students from 60 schools throughout the Netherlands are participating the national final of the Technasium Top Award 2018, on June 5th. On this day the teams present their inventive preventionmethods to prevent a worldwide virusoutbreak. A competent jury will decide which team can take the award home. Eric van Gorp, infectioloog at the Viroscience Department of the Erasmus MC and from the foundation Cirion, formulated the mission of the Technasium Top Award. He asked the students to think in a creative way, about the prevention of a worldwide virus outbreak.

  • Nationale Roadmap: 138 miljoen Euro voor tien hoogwaardige onderzoeksfaciliteiten

    Op donderdag 12 april 2018 heeft minister Van Engelshoven van het ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap de certificaten uitgereikt voor de Nationale Roadmap Grootschalige Wetenschappelijke Infrastructuur. De bouw of vernieuwing van de tien gehonoreerde toponderzoeksfaciliteiten krijgt de hoogste prioriteit voor de wetenschap. In totaal is €138 miljoen uitgereikt.
