Mission of the Furore sector

The research program of the furore ( Physics and UROdynamic REsearch) group of the department Urology, Erasmus MC- Faculty concentrates on physical and physiological modelling of the urinary tract and clinical applications. Models are developed on the basis of physiological and electrophysiological measurements in single smooth muscle cells, muscle fibres and complete organ systems in vitro. Passive and active mechanical properties and excitation-contraction coupling of urinary tract smooth muscle are described in this way. The innervation and function of the urinary tract are studied in situ using morphological and neurophysiological methods. The developed models are clinically applied in new diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Function and dysfunction of the urinary tract are diagnosed quantitatively and new treatment modalities are evaluated objectively. Automated analysis of clinical data and non invasive diagnostic methods are important issues.
