RESEARCH LINES

Ali Akyildiz received his BSc degree (2007) and MSc degree (2009) from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Bogazici University, Istanbul. Afterwards, he joined the Biomechanics Laboratory of the Department of Biomedical Engineering in Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam as a graduate student and was awarded with a PhD degree (2013) for his dissertation entitled "Biomechanical Modeling of Atherosclerotic Plaques for Risk Assessment" under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Antonius van der Steen (supervisor) and Dr. Frank Gijsen (co-supervisor).

After finishing his PhD, Dr. Akyildiz worked as a post-doctoral researcher until 2016 in the Center for Modeling, Simulation, & Imaging in Medicine at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, where he founded a biomechanics laboratory and investigated structural, electrical and thermal properties of biological soft tissues.

Dr. Akyildiz was offered a post-doctoral research fellow position by the Department of Biomedical Engineering in Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam in January, 2016. Since then, he conducts research at the department on "Rupture Risk Assessment for Carotid Plaques", an STW-funded project. His research involves the mechanical characterization of carotid plaques and developing high-fidelity computational biomechanical models for assessment of plaque stresses.
