Our mission

To conduct eminent research and education with a discernable impact on population health at the local, national, and international level.

We strive at high-quality scientific publications on relevant and innovative topics, excellent education that learns students how to tackle current public health problems, and dissemination of our knowledge and expertise to support evidence-based practice.
Cross-disciplinary research is the key approach to strengthen ongoing research and to develop new areas and opportunities. We aim at an open and critical atmosphere in which employees feel inspired and happy to contribute to our mission.

Eminent research
Often conducted in close collaboration with local and national public health or health care organizations, our research is organized in two main programmes.

  • Determinants and primary prevention: to better understand the social and physical determinants of population health and develop effective primary preventive interventions to improve population health.
  • Secondary prevention and care: to contribute to population health by evaluating the process, effects, and cost-effectiveness of health care interventions.

Excellent education
Teaching activities of the department comprise undergraduate training for medical and non-medical students and postgraduate training for students from various disciplines seeking to specialize in public health research, epidemiology, and health services research.
The department is a founding member of Nihes, the Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences, a postgraduate school for research training accredited by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
We also contribute to the training programs for public health professionals as provided by the Netherlands School of Public and Occupational Health (NSPOH).
