Sophia Children’s Hospital celebrates 150th anniversary
Proceeds of the activities to go to the shortly to be opened Sophia Children’s Thorax Center
In 2013, Erasmus MC–Sophia Children’s Hospital will celebrate its 150th anniversary. It is the oldest children’s hospital in the Netherlands and to celebrate this there will be many activities throughout the year for everyone who cares about Sophia Children’s Hospital. In the first three months of the year there will be a benefit concert by The Friends of Amstel LIVE!, a world-record attempt at making a 400 meter long birthday cake and various sports activities will take place in the region. All the activities are made possible thanks to the help of sponsors and the proceeds will go to the shortly to be opened Sophia Children’s Thorax Center. An overview of some of the upcoming events:

12 January – 400 meter long cake in the Cruise Terminal
More than 200 children participating in Generation R (study on growth, development and health of 10,000 children growing up in Rotterdam) will attempt to make the longest birthday cake in the world. It will also mark the launch of a special Sophia pastry that will be sold throughout the year at various locations in the region for Sophia Children’s Thorax Center.

27 January – The Friends of Amstel LIVE! Sophia Benefit concert
The performances by Marco Borsato, Nick & Simon, BLØF, Ilse DeLange, Gers Pardoel, Di-Rect, Acda en de Munnik, VanVelzen, De Dijk, Rob de Nijs, Xander de Buisonjé, and several other musical guests and contributions by the suppliers will be on a voluntary basis for this one-time event that will take place on Sunday afternoon 27 January at Ahoy Rotterdam. All the proceeds of this show will go to Sophia Children’s Thorax Center.
The Haarlem singer Sandra van Nieuwland who completely dominated the Dutch charts in the last few months of 2012, has now also joined the other artists. It will be her first major live performance. Van Nieuwland became famous in The Voice of Holland where she was overwhelmed in the finals with her double platinum single More, her platinum single Keep Your Head Up and gold single Beggin' and New Age. No other Dutch artist has ever achieved this.

Sophia at school
All elementary schools in Rotterdam, Zeeland and West-Brabant will receive a teaching package with information on Sophia Children’s Hospital. The package is suitable for children from 1st grade onwards and there is a separate book for grades 5 and 6. The teaching package provides an insight into Sophia Children’s Hospital. Anniversary proceeds will go to Sophia Children’s Thorax Center
For 150 years, Erasmus MC- Sophia Children’s Hospital has put its heart and soul into caring for sick children. The Children’s Hospital’s staff aims to continuously improve the care for children. In 2013, a unique step will be taken in achieving this by establishing the first Children’s Thorax Center in the Netherlands. The proceeds of the activities and events will go towards the opening of this center. Sophia Children’s Thorax Center will be a unique department where top specialists work together intensively and carry out research on the causes and effects of heart, lung and respiratory disorders in children thereby increasing their chances for a healthy future.
