PhD Health Sciences

the PhD possibilities at the research school NIHES (Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences)

Summary PhD in Health Sciences

The PhD program in Health Sciences is organized by the research school NIHES (Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences). NIHES is interested in contributing to the identification of determinants of health and disease, in finding factors contributing to the efficiency of healthcare and in further developing methods for the acquisition and interpretation of medical data. This is achieved by providing research training in quantitative medicine and Health Sciences at both graduate and postgraduate levels. We offer research training that forms the perfect basis to start a PhD project: our Master of Science programs.

Generation R
The Generation R study is designed to identify early environmental and genetic causes of normal and abnormal growth, development and health from fetal life until young adulthood. The study focuses on four primary areas of research: Growth and physical development, behavioural and cognitive development, diseases in childhood and health and healthcare for pregnant women and children. In total, almost 10.000 mothers were enrolled in the study.

Rotterdam Study
Erasmus Rotterdam Gezondheid Onderzoek (ERGO) also called Rotterdam Study, is a large scale cohort study among fifteen thousand people aged 45 and older from the district Ommoord in Rotterdam. This study started in 1990. All participants return for research every three years. Researchers check them for illnesses. These illnesses are then related to the features that were measured at their intake in 1990. The uniqueness of this study is that very different clinical pictures are being measured such as Parkinsons disease, Alzheimer and Cardiac Diseases. Since its start over a thousand scientific publications appeared in scientific papers.
