Three international awards for Hematology

Three physician-researchers of Erasmus MC's departments of Hematology and Pediatric Hematology have been awarded the Professor Heimburger Award 2018.

Samantha Donkel, Ferdows Atiq en Jessica Heijdra received the award at the Heimburger Symposium in Marburg, Germany. They are three of five recipients who were granted the award, the other two are a French and  an American scientist.  They will each receive € 20,000 for their research:

  • Dr. Ferdows Atiq: The effect of comorbidities on von Willebrand factor, Factor VIII levels and bleeding phenotype in patients with von Willebrand disease.

  • Samantha Donkel: The Emerging Role of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (NETs) and the Interaction with Von Willebrand Factor, ADAMTS13 and Fibrinogen in Stroke Pathogenesis.

  • Dr. Jessica Heijdra: Differentiation of endogenous and exogenous VWF fractions in treatment of von Willebrand disease ("INSIDE-OUT" study)

The Heimburger Award, named after coagulation therapy pioneer Prof. Norbert Heimburger, is an international award which is granted annually to five young researchers in the field of coagulation research.

Head of the department of Hematology Prof. Frank Leebeek: "It is wonderful that our physician-researchers already win international awards in such early phase of their scientific careers . It shows how much talent Erasmus MC harbors and that our research is valued internationally."
