He started training in Anaesthetics at the Klinik für Anaesthesiologie, UniversitätsKlinikum Heidelberg, where he helped set up an interdisciplinary study centre and was appointed Anaesthesiologischer Leiter (Anaesthesiological Head) of the Interdisziplinäres Studienzentrum für Anaesthesiologie und Chirurgie am UniversitätsKlinikum Heidelberg (ISA/C, Interdisciplinary Study Centre for Anaesthesiology and Surgery at the UniversitätsKlinikum Heidelberg).
Currently he is participating in the NIHES Master of Science programme in Health Sciences, specialization Clinical Epiemiology.
Under the supervision of Professor Myriam Hunink, MD, PhD he is working on Perioperative corticosteroids for patients undergoing elective major abdominal surgery (CORPUS)
a comprehensive analysis of risks and benefits of high doses of perioperative corticosteroids in major abdominal surgery funded by the Deutsches Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF, German federal ministry of education and research)

His research focuses on perioperative care with special emphasis on fluid therapy as well as on systemic inflammatory response to surgical trauma and to infection (systemic inflammatory response syndrome [SIRS], sepsis, severe sepsis, septic shock) using techniques from clinical epidemiology and meta-analysis.
