PhD project: The pharmacokinetics of antibiotics registered for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections

Promotors: Prof. Dr. J.W. Mouton

Co-promotor: Dr. B. Koch; Prof. Dr. T. van Gelder

Uncomplicated urinary tract infections are the most common bacterial infection among otherwise healthy, premenopausal women. Fosfomycine and nitrofurantoin are oral treatment options, registered for these infections. Despite both drugs have been used clinically for decades, little is known about their pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) characteristics. Knowledge of these PK/PD characteristics serves as the base of therapy optimization and the prevention of emergence of resistance. The aim of this PhD project is do gain more insight into the PK/PD properties of these drugs in order to maintain their antimicrobial activity against uropathogens.
