Ivo Touw studied Biology at the University of Amsterdam and graduated in 1981 (cum laude). He did his PhD training at the Daniel den Hoed Cancer and received his degree (cum laude) in 1986. His main research interest is acute myeloid leukemia, in particular the cellular and genetic defects underlying this complex disease. In 1994, his group discovered that nonsense mutations in the receptor for the hematopoietic growth factor receptor G-CSF found in patients with severe congenital neutropenia predispose for progression to acute myeloid leukemia. To further study the functional consequences of these mutations, he received a PIONEER award from the NWO (1994-2000).

Ivo Touw is professor of Experimental Hematology (pathophysiology of the hematopoietic system) since March 1999, vice–chairman of the Scientific Council of the Dutch Cancer Society NKB (2001-2007) and chairman of the Educational Committee of the Erasmus MC Postgraduate School Molecular Medicine. As of 2005, he is Associate Editor of Haematologica and in 2006, he was elected to the board (councilor) of the European Haematology Association.
