Ruud Delwel received his PhD at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, where he studied growth and differentiation of acute myeloid leukemias (AML). He did his postdoctoral training at the St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. By means of retroviral insertional mutagenesis, he identified a novel leukemia disease gene and demonstrated its involment a differentiation arrest, a hallmark for myeloid leukemia.

He started his own research group at the Department of Hematology at the Erasmus MC in 1992. Using the retrovirus approach he identified a large number of novel transforming genes in mouse leukemias. Moreover, by using state-of-the art molecular approaches he demonstrated the clinical relevance for several of these genes by analysing large AML patient cohorts. In 1999, he became Associate Professor and in 2010 Professor “Molecular Leukemogenesis” at the Hematology department. He runs a research group of several postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. He is one of the Course Directors of the MSc Molecular Medicine program at Erasmus MC.
