The central research theme of the Department of Molecular Genetics at the Erasmus University Medical Center is the mechanism and biological relevance of the DNA damage response. The Department has a long history and strong world-wide reputation in understanding mechanisms of the DNA damage response from the molecular level to physiological processes in the body in the context of cancer, aging and aging-related diseases.

Highly multidisciplinary research teams perform basic and applied research ranging from the single molecule level up to complete organisms and patient derived materials employing state-of-the-art technologies, including genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, bioimaging and transgenesis. In addition, the Molecular Genetics Department coordinates teaching in the BSc phase of Medicine (Oncology), theĀ BSc and MSc Nanobiology program and the research MSc Molecular Medicine program.
